Emergency fund takes a hit

June 26th, 2010 at 03:04 am

The transmission on my Jeep went out and I had to shell out $2500 for a new one. Grrrr.... My first thought was I need to get rid of this heap but of course that is ridiculous since I won't be able to buy another reliable car for $2500 but still.....I hate spending money on anything automotive related, it seems like such a waste of money. Thank goodness, for the emergency fund but it is still infuriating.

I felt the same way five years ago. It was the transmission on my minivan that was eight years old at the time, and the cost was $1,800. The car is still running today. Smile

Actually, there are plenty of reliable cars out there. I've bought two in the $1k range (no complaints - that's 10 years of driving for $2k, for me).

Hopefully the fix will last a while! Like momcents' van.

Hey, that is what the EF is for, and it leads to a better outcome than having to worry about it WITHOUT that money available! I still prefer good used cars to new. The insurance is usually less, the depreciation can be negligible, and I don't freak out over my mode of transportation as much. Hope that the new tranny works out well!
